7 Days of Somethings: Day 2

Imagine you're driving to work. It's a nice sunny morning, you're sipping your coffee, singing along to some Jason Mraz and enjoying the scenery. You come up around a bend and see these two chairs sitting at the curb.

It's not trash day.

Do you stop and check them out?

If you like 'em, do you just take them or do you drive down a long driveway and consider knocking on the door to ask if they're really trash for fear if you take them there will be a story on the 6 o'clock news about chairs that were stolen by a woman driving a black SUV?

Yeah, I drove up to the house to ask. Nerd.

It was a beautiful house, set in the woods with an amazing water garden out front... most likely not the home of a crazy man luring young women to his door by putting cool chairs out on his tree lawn.

As I pulled up, a concerned looking woman poked her head out the front door. What? She's never had random visitors at 8 in the morning?

I kindly asked if the chairs on her tree lawn were trash and indeed they were! She asked if all 8 were still there. There were only 2... and thank goodness because I couldn't take more than 2, plus I would have hemmed and hawed trying to figure out which were the best 2 out of the 8.

I thanked her for allowing me to take them, and told her what a beautiful water garden she had. NERD.

I'm not sure if I am going to put these in my "Something to be Found End of Garage Sale Season Friends and Family Sale" (I need to work on the name) or keep one of them for myself. I'll have to wheel one  around the house and see if it can find a place to call home.

Have you ever gotten anything good from someone's trash? Did you knock on the door to ask the owner? If so, you must share stories!!

Day 2 complete. Tomorrow I'll be sharing my Somethings from another street sale. Wait until you see the stools I got...

  3. They're actually really great--maybe because I'm digging the red? I haven't ever stopped like you did, but my sister-in-law has no problem doing so and ends up with some terrific finds she reworks and keeps or resells. You have nothing to lose!

  4. First, let me say--I already LOVE this series. Oprah or no. As someone who lives vintage, it's pretty darn awesome.

Second, the chairs are beautiful! And you're more patient than me, who prob would have just thrown them into my car gleefully (wha--?) Thats definitely one of the best freebies ever!

  5. I think it's very thoughtful of you to check and see if the chairs were for the taking. I also think you were really smart to take them! Those are beautiful - I would so be keeping them (at least one for sure!). They look perfect and I love how you accessorized it.

  8. My sister told me about this awesome garage sale that was going on, but I couldn't go because I was out of town. She happened to mention it again the following Monday. I said...let's go by and check it out. The door was open and I asked the fellow inside if I could check out his no-over garage sale. He said "SURE!...just take anything you want..for free"!! Whoa!! I got lots of glassware, a super cool double-ladder and some beautifully patina-ed old shutters. Score! My sister picked up two huge log benches for free, also. Never hurts to ask!

  9. I laughed when I read your post! Love the chairs and I think I would have swooped them up if they were by the curb. Cause really! Who would just set chairs out unless they wanted someone to take them :) Stopping by from Debbie Doos feature of you :)
